Silversmithing

The silversmithing class will guide you through the basic skills need to work with alloy metals in the art of jewellery making, including setting faceted stones into the jewellery made in the class.  Alloys used in the class are Copper, Brass and Silver.  Two Cabochons will be provided during the course to the bezel Jewellery..

During the course you will learn:

  • Use of the tools required for basic silversmithing
  • End to end basic processes in working with alloys (using Brass, Copper and Silver) in simple designs and texturing techniques
  • Learn how to use jewellers saw to cut and files to shape
  • Build up silver soldering skills to assemble
  • Bend metal to shape
  • Metal Polishing techniques
  • Complete the following jewellery pieces:  
    • 3 rings (2 copper 1 brass). 
    • 1 bezel pendent and 1 bezel ring.  (Bezel is a style for mounting stone). 

Pre requisites / required for attendance

    • Must be over 16 years of age
    • Long hair must be tied up or in hair net
    • Safety glasses provided or you can bring your own
    • Closed footwear with good grip must be worn

Additional Material cost?

Dependent on current market price of alloys provided for the course, but generally starting from $110 (in addition to the standard course fee)

Course Frequency and Times

Courses are offered every second month with a class size of 4 participants. 
The course classes run from 7.00 pm – 10.00 pm once a week over 6 week period.
